Why We Created a Pride Collection That Goes Beyond the Rainbow

Why We Created a Pride Collection That Goes Beyond the Rainbow

When most people think of Pride flowers, they picture the six colours of the rainbow flag. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet. It's a beautiful, powerful symbol and one we deeply respect. But the LGBTQ+ community is far larger and more varied than any single flag can capture, and we felt that a truly meaningful Pride collection should reflect that.

That's the thinking behind The Blossom Shop's Pride collection. Six arrangements. Six iconic figures. Six communities that each deserve to see themselves celebrated.

Here's what went into it, and why it matters to us.

Flowers Have Always Carried Meaning

Long before florists existed, flowers were used to communicate what words sometimes couldn't. The Victorians developed an entire language of flowers called floriography, where specific blooms carried coded messages between people who couldn't speak freely. Violets signalled same-sex love. Flowers exchanged between women carried meanings that polite society was never meant to decode.

There's something quietly powerful about that history. Flowers have been part of queer expression for a very long time, even when that expression had to be hidden.

We wanted to honour that tradition by creating arrangements that are anything but hidden. Bouquets that are open, specific, and proud about exactly who and what they celebrate.

Why Icons, and Why These Six

Naming each bouquet after a specific person was a deliberate choice. It would have been simpler to name them after flags or colours. But flags, as meaningful as they are, are symbols. People are stories.

Each of the six icons we chose has a life and a legacy that the LGBTQ+ community has connected with deeply. Marsha P. Johnson, who fought for Gay and Trans rights at a time when doing so was genuinely dangerous. Laverne Cox, who has used her visibility to advocate for Trans people with intelligence and grace. Freddie Mercury, whose life continues to resonate with the Bisexual community. Frida Kahlo, whose art and relationships have made her an enduring Lesbian icon. Alok Vaid-Menon, whose writing and performance work has expanded the conversation around Nonbinary and gender-nonconforming identity. And the Asexual community itself, which so rarely sees itself represented anywhere.

When someone receives The Marsha or The Laverne or The Alok, they're not just receiving flowers. They're receiving an acknowledgment. Someone saw their community, thought it was worth celebrating, and made something beautiful in its honour.

Going Beyond the Rainbow

The rainbow flag is iconic for good reason. It has represented LGBTQ+ solidarity and visibility since Gilbert Baker designed it in 1978. But over the decades, many communities within the broader LGBTQ+ umbrella have created their own flags to signal their specific identities, because visibility matters at every level, not just collectively but individually.

The Bisexual Pride flag. The Transgender Pride flag. The Nonbinary Pride flag. The Asexual Pride flag. Each one exists because someone in that community felt unseen and decided to do something about it.

Our collection draws on those flags intentionally. The colour palettes in each bouquet are chosen to reflect the flag of the community it honours. It's a small detail, but it's one that people notice and that carries real meaning.

What We Hope These Bouquets Do

We hope The Blossom Shop's Pride collection does a few things.

We hope it gives people a meaningful way to celebrate LGBTQ+ loved ones with something that goes deeper than a generic rainbow gesture. We hope it helps people learn something, because not everyone knows who Alok Vaid-Menon is or what the Asexual Pride flag looks like, and that's okay. We hope it starts conversations.

And we hope it signals clearly that The Blossom Shop is a space where every part of the LGBTQ+ community is welcome, seen, and worth celebrating.

These bouquets are available year-round, because Pride doesn't begin and end in June. If you'd like to learn more about each arrangement and the icon who inspired it, you can read about all six in our full Pride collection guide.
